RACE RATING CHANGE IN MO-2: Cook Political Report Shifts Rating Towards Democrats

Citing VanOstran’s strong fundraising and weak polling for Republicans, the Cook Political Report has shifted their rating of this suburban St. Louis district towards Democrats.

CLAYTON, MO. – This morning the non-partisan Cook Political Report announced that it was moving its rating of MO-2 towards Democrats. VanOstran announced last week that he outraised Rep. Ann Wagner for the second consecutive quarter. He ended the year with over $340,000 in total contributions in 2017, and over $240,000 cash on hand.

Said the Cook Political Report: “When [Ann] Wagner announced she would forgo a Senate bid and run for reelection, most considered her a lock. But young Democratic attorney Cort VanOstran has surprised some by raising $334,000. Wagner will have access to all the money she needs, but this suburban seat is the only in Missouri that didn’t migrate to Trump in 2016, and Sen. Claire McCaskill may need to carry it to win reelection.”

The rating change comes on the heels of a stunning win for Democrats in the region when on Tuesday Democrat Mike Revis won State House District 97. HD-97, which voted for Donald Trump by 31 points, represents one of the reddest areas of MO-2.

VanOstran has been endorsed by numerous Democratic leaders including Missouri State Representatives Stacey Newman, Tracy McCreery, and Cora Faith Walker; St. Louis County Assessor Jake Zimmerman; former Missouri State Senators Joan Bray and Rita Heard Days; former St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley; former Missouri State Representatives Bill Otto, Jeanne Kirkton, and Susan Carlson; former Mayor of St Louis Vince Schoemehl; and former Chief of Staff to Vice-President Al Gore, Charles Burson.
