The race for Missouri’s 2nd Congressional District
ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOV.com) - Congresswoman Ann Wagner is being challenged in Missouri’s 2nd Congressional District by Cort VanOstran.
The district is the wealthiest in Missouri and often has the highest vote total. Geographically, it covers west St. Louis County, and parts of Jefferson and St. Charles Counties. Demographically, it is 89 percent white.
Wagner, 56, is seeking her fourth term. She was previously Ambassador to Luxembourg. In the past, she has touted her achievements as banking reform and combating human trafficking.
She said she is concerned for farmers and about steel and aluminum tariffs. She has supported legislation to fight tax identity theft.
VanOstran, 30, is an attorney who is running for political office for the first time and has made healthcare as a central part of his campaign, saying Wagner’s vote on the Republican health care plan is what caused him to jump into the race.
VanOstran says the economy is doing well for some under GOP control of the federal government but said many people feel like the economy is not improving for them.
The district has been Republican in recent decades, having been represented by Todd Akin and Jim Talent. It has not sent a Democrat to Congress since 1990.
